Tihoussai



Tihoussai is a cultural and folkloric association in Tamanrasset, southern Algeria run by Tuareg women. Tamanrasset, the capital of the Tuareg, is situated in the heart of the Sahara Desert. They produce traditional Tuareg crafts and perform singing accompanied by their playing of traditional Tuareg tende drums. In Tuareg culture, these performances are normally reserved for ritual events.

Our Director, Alberto Arzoz, was fortunate to witness a performance in the summer of 2007 during his assignment in the Algerian Sahara, at which he took this picture. The members of Tihoussai are keen to travel abroad to promote their art and their traditions. They can be contacted (in French only) at:
