Adopt an Indigenous School

Our adopt an indigenous school program partners Western schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and youth groups with schools in indigenous communities. The goal of the program is to foster a mutually-beneficial learning relationship between Western and indigenous community students. In this relationship the students of each school learn from each other about their culture, history, lifestyle, ambitions, dreams, etc. Once a partnership is established, both schools become benefactors and at the same time benefactees! Participation is open to all schools and all indigenous groups worldwide.

The program operates as follows. Teachers, PTA members, school principals, youth group leaders, NGOs and others may apply to join the program on behalf of the school or youth group they represent. The Peoples of the World Foundation plays the role of partnership broker. Once partnered, the two schools are placed in contact with each other. Exchanges may then be conducted using whatever means the schools choose. At a minimum partnered schools will have set up, exclusively for them, an online discussion forum in which only they may participate.

Program and Application Guidelines

Each Western school or youth group accepted into the program receives a customized adopt-a-school program package, containing material about the school it chooses to adopt. The package contains educational material about the school's locale, the indigenous culture and its history, as well as information about the community where the school is located, the enrolled students etc. It may also contain letters and photographs from the students.

In return the school is expected to provide similar educational material about its own locale, culture, history etc. In addition, the Western school is expected to undertake fundraising activities, with all proceeds going to the indigenous school it adopts. (The supplied package includes suggestions for fundraising activities.)
